Previously known as the Houston Oilers, the team began play in 1960 in Houston, Texas, as a charter member of the American Football League and complete the National Football League. The team relocated from Houston to Tennessee in 1997, and played at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis for one season. The team then moved to Nashville in 1998 and played in Vanderbilt Stadium. For those two years, they were known as the Tennessee Oilers, but changed their name to Tennessee Titans for the 1999 season. It marks the franchise’s 23rd season in the state of Tennessee, their 22nd in Nashville and their second full season under head coach Mike Vrabel. The Titans matched their 9–7 record for the fourth straight year and returned to the postseason after a one-year absence. In the playoffs, the Titans upset the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the Wild Card Round by a score of 20–13, advancing them to the Divisional Round. The win over the Patriots was the Titans’ first win at Gillette Stadium, and their first in Foxboro since 1993. The Titans then upset the heavily favored top-seeded Baltimore Ravens 28–12 advancing to their first AFC Championship Game since 2002. They played the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship on January 19, 2020 to determine which AFC team would play in Super Bowl LIV, and attempted to make their first Super Bowl in 20 years as well as become the first team since the 2010 Green Bay Packers to win three straight playoff games on the road. However, the Titans’ Cinderella run season came to an end when they lost to the eventual Super Bowl LIV champion Chiefs 35–24 at Arrowhead Stadium.
